Apollinaire's poetic record of his war experiences, was published a few months before his death November 9, 1918.Picasso, familiar with the poems painted Guernica 1937.

It rained bombs on Guernica; then it rained bombs on Warsaw, and it rained bombs on Rotterdam.
It rained bombs on Coventry; it rained bombs on Brest. It rained bombs on Dresden; it rained bombs on Tokyo and the rest.
It rained bombs on Belgrade, it rained bombs on Baghdad. It rained bombs on Beirut, and bombs on Gaza. It rained on the schools, the hospitals and the city plaza.
Guernica, the name of a Basque village in Spain. Its first four letters match the French word for "guerre" or war in Guernica and the rest of the world. Guernica, where death came from the sky.
The bombs fell like rain again and again. The children lay lifeless on the ground next to the wounded dogs waiting to die. But why? In the name of victory!
Guernica, whose villagers were shell shocked, their bodies torn by shrapnel and burning, molten, shards of steel, which cut the flesh and severed their limbs. Guernica, on an afternoon Monday in 1937, peace was shattered; the bombers dropped their loads from above.
It rained incendiary bombs over the Spanish villages, then later, over the Algerian towns and its deserted squares; it rained napalm over Vietnam, Cambodia and you know where. It rained cluster bombs in Serbia, but did we dare to care?
It rained "bunker busters" and plutonium radiation. It rained with "shock and awe" and the earth trembled. After the rain of bombs, dismembered corpses littered the streets to rot under the hot sun. Then it rained again, it poured but the cries of anguish were ignored.
Finally, a great deluge of firepower and aerial death came forth with the wrath and vengeance of a Greek god. Then a flood of human blood crested and washed the rest of the living remnants away. But this war was not yet won, nor ended and it rained more bombs the next day.
