Is the Kent State University tragedy evidence to explain American Attitudes to the Vietnam War?
Hello! I am doing an assignment in History and I was just wondering if anyone would know the strengths and limitations of the Kent State University shootings as evidence to explain American attitudes to the Vietnam War.
Thank you!
Sort of. The Kent State Incident marked the turning point of campus protests, as afterwards the protesters began to back off, rightfully fearing the government was about to turn lethal.
While we have a similar situation today between the Conservatives and the Liberals, back then it was between the generations, with the "don't trust anyone over 30" line as the approximate demarcation. Those younger were the "long-haired commie Hippies," and those on the other side were the "Redneck-Hardhats," a reference to the hardhat construction workers who were the Conservatives at the time.
The difference was that the Hippies, in wake of the race riots in Watts and Newark, were becoming violent themselves when protesting the Vietnam War. Kent State was where the National Guard finally opened fire. Thankfully, it was also the ONLY time this happened.
