Biblical Question?
Perhaps one of you Christians can explain this to me:
The bible is pretty clear that men should have short hair.
1 Cor 11:14 - "Does not even nature itself teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a dishonor to him."
So, why is it that every picture of Jesus shows him as a long-haired hippy? Was Jesus unnatural and dishonored - or did Christians just pick a blatantly wrong image of Jesus, and stick with it?
The bible is also pretty clear that men should _not_ wear hats while praying or preaching.
1 Cor 11:4 - "Every man who has something on his head while praying or prophesying disgraces his head."
So, what's up with the pontiff's pointy cap? Is the pope not disgracing his head?
I'm somewhat serious about these questions... I'm trying to understand how is it that Christians seem so comfortable with contradiction.
You are perfectly correct... unfortunately
Modern Christianity is more Pagan than Christian.
I am a Christian, and like you I am amazed at the strange images and contradictory beliefs put forward... Jesus was from Nazareth, and if he was light skinned or blond that would have raised more than a few comments.
As you stated there is a vast chasm between what is written and what modern new age Christians believe.
eg: Mathew 23:9 Jesus's own words and command
"Do not call anyone on earth your father; for One is your Father, He who is in heaven" How many pretenders in leadership glory in being called Father. Father is the Title Jesus uses for god, in Latin father is the title pope.
The whole chapter is about hording power over the people and creating titles and structures of control.
I like that claim earlier that you are in the old testament... the ignorance of what is written is beggers belief. You were perfectly correct in stating these were early Christian teachings. from the New Testament.
The only thing I can say really is that new age Christians is not the religion of Christ.
I am deeply ashamed of the poverty of teaching within the modern Church,
I teach Theology and barely a day go's past when a student will challenge a historical teaching as new, claiming that something the early church held as essential was new and unimportant.
For those who know very little about the bible I should point out Jesus was from the town of Nazareth. Also there was a religious group called Nasarites this had nothing to do with the town, the names are a little similar but there is no connection between the two. Jesus was not a Nasarite However I believe John the Baptist was, hence the comments on how he lived and dressed.
Jesus was short, dark skinned, black or dark brown hair and eyes, possibly balding. (premature balding is common in the tribe of Benjamin) This is the demographic similarities of those who lived in Nazareth...
