My father-in-law passed away, then smiled?
It's awkward enough to explain, but in short, my father-in-law passed away in his bed a week ago. When he left, his mouth was hanging open. His mother wrapped a handkerchief around his head and tried to close his mouth, but was unable to do so (rigor mortis?) After about 30 minutes, his mouth had closed, no one said they closed it. In addition, his mouth had formed a smile, similar to Mona Lisa I guess you could say. From what I know, muscles don't contract after death, so how would a smile had been formed?
Many people put bandages or handkerchiefs etc around the head to stop the mouth/lower jaw slacking once rigor mortis sets in.
I'm not sure the mouth forms into a slight smile, however it is better then having the mortician sew the lips together.
