Canadians: Do men's sweatshirts in canada zip up on the left instead of the right?
I know this sounds stupid, but I really don't know.
A friend got me a size large sweatshirt from Quebec, Canada. Unlike most men's sweatshirts and jackets that zip up on the right side, this sweatshirt zips up on the left.
My friend said he found in in the men's section, but I'm not sure it's a men's sweatshirt.
If you go back to before the time of the zipper, most wealthy people's garments had buttons on their clothing. During the medieval times, affluent families had servants that would help the women of the family get dressed.
Now traditionally, the left hand was considered "evil". (Even as late as the 1950s, my mother was disciplined by the nuns at her Catholic school for using her left hand to write at school.) So it was important that you would button your shirt with your right hand.
Rumour has it that for men, since they traditionally dressed themselves, the buttons were placed on the garment so that the man would use his right hand to button a shirt or trousers closed. For women, who had their maids help to dress them, the buttons were placed on the left side so that the servant would use their right hand to do up the buttons.
By the time the zipper was introduced as a item on clothing in the 1930s (the modern zipper was only developed in 1913), women were fastening their own clothing, so most zippers were designed for right handed "zipping" just for convenience - manufacturers were able to buy one type of zipper for ALL their clothing. Of course, some clothing companies retained the tradition and hence the need for fastener companies (like YKK in Japan) to produce a lefty and righty version.
I think that the only way to really tell is if the zipper has a fold of fabric over it that hides the zipper. If that fold is left to right, it's generally considered menswear. If the fabric covers right to left, it's usually a woman's garment. But keep in mind, there is also unisex clothing...so what direction would that one take?
Regardless, I would say who cares what side it zips on, as long as it looks good on you.
