Homeboy Rap Hip
Hip Hop in the south?

okay, I live in Atlanta right now and I have a homeboy that can really spit (rap), no way is he on Nas level but his style is similar, he's a true lyricist. Anyways he went numerous record company's down here and they said that he doesn't have that industry ready look and he should dumb down his lyrics to appeal to the mass crowd... So my question to y'all, what could the music industry possibly be looking for when it comes to mc's? I'm a Georgia native, always been a hip hop fan, but i'm really starting to believe that the south killed hip hop, that's tough words coming from a southern rap fan (ex. Ugk, 8ball & Mjg, Outkast, Scarface and etc...)!

they want something that is easy to sell. deep lyrics aren't mainstream thus are pushed to the back so they can sign the next soulja boi or whatever corny ass crap comes out next.

i would look into smaller independent labels if you are trying to find someone to sign with. look into other underground artists that are on the same level and look into their labels.

a lot of times when it comes to deep lyricists its hard to find a label that will promote it, especially if they are unknown. the best way to avoid this is to record and promote yourself. start your own label. it will cost some money, but if the skill is there, the money will come back around (see Jay-Z and Roc-A-Fella).

start with recording your own demo or mix tape. you can set-up a home studio really cheap these days. hip-hop recording is easy as hell as long as you have a producer for the beats. once you've gotten something down on record, start posting it everywhere. i recommend myspace music and youtube because they're free. start putting on shows and building a fan base. once you've gotten your chops up record an actual album. this could be done by you guys at home, or going to a studio (expensive). once you have an album, sell it and keep track of the sales.

once you build a following and have sold some cd's, then you have something to come back at the labels that say to "dumb down" the lyrics. it's hard to argue that a group can't be marketed when you show up showing that you're selling a shitload of albums out of your car. once you've go a good fan base and start selling shows, labels will take intrest.

the problem i think you're going to have is that you are going to have to prove that you guys can appeal to people. that will be a lot of hard work, but if its what you guys want, then go for it.

good luck
