Concerned for my Neighbors' Kids?
I just pulled up in front of my house after running some errands. One of my neighbors is sitting on her front porch watching the two children from a few houses down playing. The sun has set, so it's pretty dark out, and there's lots of snow, but the temperature is still in the high 30s. I couldn't get a real good look for myself, but according to this neighbor, one of the kids is wearing shorts. I do know that the ages of the children are six and three. There is no adult in sight. My neighbor says she has a good mind to report negligence. I'm not really sure it's worth getting someone involved like that if they are getting sufficient care otherwise. What would you do?
Before (g)you go and make a mountain out of a mole hill, go and talk to the parents. I would also tell that neighbour to stop being a peeing tom and a gossip, get off her lazy as* and to do the same thing.
I know that between the ages of 2-12, a child's want to be independant and choose their own clothing is a big issue. Even though mum may have said NO, put some warmer clothes on, this child may have gone and put them on, only to get outside and take them off. My 3 year old brother does this all of the time.
He will be told to wear his hat(which we all stick on his head at any chance anyone of us gets) when he wants to go in the pool. He wears it for a little while, and then, because it gets in the road of him swimming, he takes it off. No matter how much repremanding and explaining we try with him, he will refuse to put it on again. It takes a threat of ''if you don't keep your hat on you get out of the pool'' to get him to keep it on for longer than 5 minutes.
People are too quick these days to get the authorities involved, especially *before* they know the full story. Really, IMHO, if you don't have the balls to go up and personally find out what is going on if you are that badly worried, than you should have no right in trying to get the police to do it for you.
Can you see into the house? How do you know an adult isn't watching from a window? How do you know that the parents didn't even realise the kids had gotten outside? How do you know that the kids weren't actually wrapped up snug before they went out, only to get hot whilst playing? Did they at least have jumpers and shoes on?
There are too many varibles to shout negligence. By all means, if you do talk to the parents, and there is neglect, then report them. But until then, it sounds like those two kids are having a ball, enjoying themselves. Believe me, if a kid gets cold, they will very soon come back inside.
Best of luck, but no, I wouldn't get involved. If the child was outside nude, then yes, I would be the first there, screaming abuse, but they were clothed.

@Nasty Cow...How the f!ck do they compare?!?!?!?!? Briana's heartbreaking story is in no way a comparison to 2 young kids enjoying the outdoors. That poor, defensless baby was raped and tortured by the people she trusted in her life. OF COURSE anyone with a heart would report them(and possibly do jail time over beating the sh!t out of the parents at the same time).
She *never* would have enjoyed a day out in the yard. The report even said that they could not find a single photograph of a happy, smiling little girl. What happened to her was sick, inhumane and just down right wrong.
Tell me how 2 kids getting some fresh air is wrong? Sh!t, now my parents are going to be reported, because my WHOLE family enjoys the outdoors, even my 8 week old brother!!!
Meh, what would you rather, them be outdoors, or sitting in front of the tv all day?
