A child visiting a large aquarium looks up at into a large tank of water at a 50 degree angle. The index of refraction of water is 1.33. Ignore the effects of the glass. Will the child be able to see what's above the tank? How can you tell?

For simplification I'm going to assume this is a fairly high tank. So the answer would be no, the child cannot see at the top of the tank. The reason is the light is entering from a medium of lower refraction (the air n=1.0) to the water (n=1.33). Imagine seeing the child standing on the left of the tank. Draw a line to the edge of the glass representing the 50 degree angle. Then draw a line perpendicular to the side of the fish tank that touches the 50 degree line. This is the "normal" line. When light enters the fish tank, the portion that refracts bends towards the normal line. So the child will see the back of the fish tank. I hope this doesn't sound confusing. It would be so much easier to show with a picture.
