Why is the country in Europe called both Holland and The Netherlands?
Why is the country that is home to the dutch called both Holland and The Neatherlands? I dont get it.
The correct name is The Netherlands, but Holland is also used sometimes, usually informally. "Holland" also denotes the western part of the country (which is made up of the provinces North Holland and South Holland).
I'd guess Holland is also used because it is shorter/easier to say and caught on, otherwise Holland is also undeniably one of the most prominent parts of the country with Amsterdam and Rotterdam and The Hague etc.
