Can there ever be peace between Israel and Palestine?
I am not sure why people are hoping for achieving any peace deal in the middle east. It seems like trying to force two pieces of puzzles that don't fit.
Even the most moderate Palestinian wants east Jerusalem as their capital, at a minimum. However, Israel would never give it up, as it sees it as part of their historical city.
I am not interested in who is right or wrong, but there is no way of achieving any peace when there is a fundamental disagreement which neither side will ever compromise on.
Palestinian Arabs, both in Gaza and West Bank, are not interested in peace and in getting their state. They will gain nothing, get a lot of responsibilites - and lose a good lump of the International aid. That is why they assume the position " we want all or nothing". Look the answer given by Scarfie: this poster seems to know the Arab side very well.
Israel IS interested in peace- but only on certain terms. One of these terms is the "right of return".
No Arab leader will dare admit that this condition is unrealistic and Israel will not accept 4 million of the hostile Arabs in Israel, it´s a suicidal condition.
Another condition is Jeruslalem. Even the most "leftist" surveys show that only some 30% of the Israelis agree to the splitting of Jerusalem. The true figures are 20% against 80%. Of this 20% , almost all are Israeli Arabs. It means that no Israeli leader will dare admit the split of Jerusalem.
The positions of the sides are irreconciliable from the start.
What "peace" are we talking about in this situation?
All these talks about "peace" are just a political maneuvering where both sides are pursuing their respective interests.
Israelis are gaining time waiting for the change of the President of the USA who will be more pro-Israeli - and looks like their expectations are very well founded.
Arabs - I am talking about the Arab world in general for whom the Palestinian Arabs are just pawns and cannon- fodder to be used and thrown away - are trying to gain better positions to achieve their true goal: to destroy Israel.
That is all "the peace process" the world is talking so much about.
