If you do not take holiday from work, should it roll over to next year?
During my first year of work I did not take any holiday as I only work part time (2 days a week). I was entitled to holiday, however assumed it would just roll over to next year. I was informed today by my employer that this is not the case and I have 'lost' my holiday time from last year. I was never told this before, no-one informed me that the holiday year was coming to an end and that I should take my holiday, in fact no-one ever mentioned it. Is there anything I can do, especially as I was never told? I have looked everywhere for advice but haven't had any luck, I would be really grateful if someone could help me
In my original contract it does not mention what happens if you don't take holidays, it just has a table saying how much you are entitled to per year
No if you do not take a holiday from work, it should not roll over to the next year. Most companies have a use it or lose policy regarding holidays. You either use them during the year or you lose them. You learned the hard way that you have to use them. The lesson to be learned here is do not make any assumptions about your holidays. Your employer does not need to tell you that holidays need to be used during the year or they expire. You can learn from this and move on. You lost your holidays the first year. Make sure to use your holidays next time.
