taking pictures on kids birthday party?
I recently bough a Canon T1i DSLR camera with EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens, and still learning to take with various setting.
One of my friend asked me to take pictures of his kids 5th Birthday, and obviously has good expectations after seeing some good pictures I took.
But, taking pictures of kids is going to be challenging. An entertainer is also coming to the party, which is being done in a community hall that has fluorescent lighting. When I set White Balancing to fluorescent light pictures are quite unnatural.
I need some advise on:
- capturing kids emotions while cake cutting and entertainer is entertaining them without blur
...what setting to do...i'm still in the process of learning so I'm not good at aperture, shutter speed, ISO settings, etc
- party other activities for which what setting i've to make in indoor fluorescent light...party is in the evening.

Use the auto white balance setting. You'll thank yourself in the end unless you're capable of shooting and working with RAW format. The reason is, especially with fluorescent, there are tons of different types available now - some with the traditional green cast and some now with "daylight" color, which wouldn't work on your cameras Fluor. setting since it's programmed to compensate for the normal green cast when it's set to that. The auto settings on most cameras now is quite good and seldom needs to be played with unless you're a serious pro and know exactly what you're going for and why you're changing it to this or that. And, obviously if you're using flash while set to the fluor. setting you're going to get even poorer results. But, on auto the camera will take all of that into consideration for you.
Now, I know a lot of people HATE shooting on auto, myself among them, but for a beginner who's (I'm guessing) not had much if any formal classes and learned the ins and outs of color temperature and such, auto is going to be a lot easier and give better results. Wouldn't you be happier with good (not great necessarially) photos using auto than "OMG why are my kids all pink" photos trying to guess at the right WB setting?
As for the capturing emotions - that's a little more tricky and will just take time and learning to get down a technique that works for you. Best thing I can suggest is don't try to pose or "say cheese" the kids. Just shoot them doing what they're already doing. Candids work best for the kind of effect you seem to be wanting.
