What's the best wax or polish for an antique mahogany dinner table?
I want to use a long-lasting and strong wax or polish that won't hurt the table, which is a family heirloom, but which also will protect it from water spots, etc.
Some truth in the answers so far, however if it is an "antique" & the finish is in good shape, less is more.
You can use Murphy's as a surface cleaner( not my favorite) well diluted when applied & removed completely.
There are ready made emulsions which are a little gentler (Guardsman is one).
Either should be applied w/ soft cloth , barely dampened with the stuff to remove any organic crud.
The auto wax / metal polish route is also OK if there is no
abrasive in it .
They can have a lot of carnauba wax in them , which is good.
I would avoid using oils esp. anything containing silicones on an antique
Beeswax is a good protectant , but is soft by itself & can smudge easily.
For an off the shelf product, Butcher's wax is also OK.
Look for a hard pastewax that contains lots of carnauba, & some beeswax.
May seem a little over the top for the homeowner, but it is the basic cleanup I used to give antique furniture after repair & does not have to be done often.
One good cleaning & a good waxing will last for a long time w/ just dusting & buffing from time to time w/ a soft cloth.
That's basically all many antique shops do before they put something in the window.
