Can you view the Sun through a telescope with aluminum foil over the lens?
During the Transit of Mercury a few years ago, an Astronomy professor on campus had telescopes set up. Some were set up to project an image through the viewfinder onto a white sheet, and some had filters over the lens to view it directly. I wanted to try this with my own refracting telescope, and I swear one of the "filters" he was using was simple aluminum foil. Problem is, I can't find ANY info. out there on whether this is safe or not.
No. Sunlight will not penetrate aluminum foil. What you probably saw was a solar filter made from Baader AstroSolar film, which is a special polymer plastic coated with a reflective metal coating. This looks a bit like foil, or the material they make PopTart wrappings out of, but it is not the same. PopTart wrapping (or similar) does not block the damaging infrared and ultraviolet radiation and should not be used. Baader film is available in many telescope stores, or from Baader in Europe and Astro-Physics in North America:
