Are film producers allowed to include famous brands in their movies?

Hey, I was just wondering, here in the UK if a producer is making a film and for example, in certain scenes in the script people are drinking Coca Cola, or hoovering the floor with a Dyson, is this perfectly legal in the UK? Are films allowed to include any famous brands in their scenes? Even if for example someone is eating a Big Mac from McDonalds but then chokes on it? (lol sorry couldnt think of any other example) In a case like this would the McDonalds company have any right at all to take legal action because their brand is shown to have a certain negative effect?

On the flip side of this, I know that certain companies will pay a producer money to include their product in their TV Show or film, and this is known as Product Placement, right? I heard recently that the laws regarding product placement changed in the UK so it will become legal. Does anyone know about this in a bit more detail? If so, any useful links you could offer?

Any thing that shows a product in a negative light, is grounds for a defamation lawsuit.

On the other hand, anything that shows a product FAVORABLY is worth charging for.

Either way, when film makers use name brand products, it is never done without permission. I used to work for McCormick Spice company and was called when the Rosanne Show wanted to show her cooking with our spices in the background... so I got some experience in this.
