why White? can't nurses wear blue cap or any other color?
I suspect it all started with the rise of the profession as started by Florence Nightingale a good 150+ years ago.
There have been many social and gender restrictions/oppression put on women and their dress, their conduct.
A lady, of any socioeconomic class in the Victorian age always, always wore a hat, even a prostitute. From an upper crust family as Nightingale? Gloves were another requirement.
Even today, there are religions where women must wear a hat or veil in the church or religious building. They must cover up their hair in some way.
Think "nuns"--prime example, lol, though they're much more modern now and some orders no longer require a habit, much less a head covering, for most things anyway.
It's mostly, and really, a social-religious value system that grew out of sexism, disguised as humility (read subservience), with biblical scripture and verse no less to back men up on it.
Think "The Pope"--you'll NEVER see a woman meeting him WITHOUT something or other on her head, even if she's the head of her OWN country bigger than HIS with more guns, more people, more land, more EVERYthing, lol. Go figure.
See, now you've got me wildly wondering about a match-up betw. the Pope and the Queen of England...I'm DYING to see what she would have on HER head if there was a meet, rofl. Gotta' Google THAT one...But, I digress, lol.
I think that nurses originally wore a piece of lace covering on top of their heads and that caps came later--very rarely do they wear them now; it's overwhelmingly voluntary, except maybe in Catholic hospitals (go figure).
When they were a regular part of their uniform, there were different styles of caps/folds in them, different sizes. Different colors indicated what nursing school you went to and/or what hospital you currently worked for.
As such, some caps may be very similar in style, but differ in that one is completely white, another has a blue band. another a black border, etc.
In really old pictures, you may notice that different nurses wore their caps at different angles on their heads even.
P.S.--I've never seen a male nurse wearing any kind of cap. Like I said, go figure.
