Why don't NWT critics criticize the translation of John 15:27?
They are missing out on an opportunity.
Here is John 15:27 -
Greek:
ἀπ’ ἀρχῆς μετ’ ἐμοῦ ἐστε
Kingdom Interlinear:
from beginning with me you-are
NWT:
You have been with me from the beginning.
Can anyone see the obvious mistranslation? Este (ἐστε) is a form of the Greek verb eimi. It is second person plural. It is *obviously* in the Greek Present Tense, as the JW's *OWN* Kingdom Interlinear translation shows us ('you are'). But in the NWT proper, they changed it to 'you have been,' which is the Perfect Tense form.
The Greek being in the Present Tense + the NWT putting it in the Perfect Tense = MISTRANSLATION!!!
Not only did the NWT ignore established rules of Greek grammar, but they conveniently condemned themselves by putting the lines side by side in their own Kingdom Interlinear for everyone to see.
Ah, a beautiful point. In this verse, translators generally agree that the present tense Greek verb has past reference when preceeded by a temporal modifier.
Although ἐστε is a present tense verb, NKJV, NIV, ESV, NASB and other English translations give a past tense reading, "have been."
The same thing applies at John 8:58, where the present tense Greek verb εἰμί s preceeded by a temporal modifier, πρὶν.
So John 8:58 likewise would be rendered as "Before Abraham was, I have been." Some Greek scholars already acknowledge this, as did the ancient Aramaic versions of John 8:58, which say, "Before Abraham existed, I WAS."
Funny how so many English versions correctly put "you have been" at John 15:27, but try to stick with "I am" at John 8:58, when the Greek constructions in both verses are grammatically the same.
The context of John 8:58 is not who Jesus was, but whether or not he existed before Abraham.
NWT critics cannot criticise the translation of John 15:27 because their own translations say the same thing.
Nor really can they successfully criticize the NWT translaltion of John 8:58 because the syntax of both verses is the same, and the context favors the NWT reading.
