Was it a mistake for Vince Sr to take the belt off Superstar Graham and give it to Bob Backland
I think it was a huge mistake. Backuland was a good wrestler but during his 6 year or so title reign. He never got that over with the fans. They had to book Andre The Giant and Jimmy Snukka and other big stars to put buts in the seat. Superstar Graham was beyond over one point having the highest percentage of selling out Madison Square Garden than any other wreslter ever.
I think he wanted to take the belt off of Graham to put it onto Backlund just for the reason to have a wrestler and not a showman usher in the new era at the time for wrestling. Before Vince Jr bought the company, it was still part of the NWA and they wanted a wrestler to represent themselves like most of the other territories did. They knew not many wanted to wrestle Graham as he was limited with his moveset.
When Backlund was near his reign they knew what the plan was that is why Iron Sheik took the belt to be utterly destroyed by Hogan and start the new wave of charismatic under Vince Jr.
