Lifeguarding?
I want to be a lifeguard this summer, and I have already signed up to do the lifeguard training program for next week. once i am an official lifeguard, what are all the things I need for the job, and where can I apply.
Job opportunities for certified Lifeguards are many and varied. From community pools to water parks to summer camps. Seems like there is almost always a shortage of lifeguards in most areas, so getting a job won't usually be a problem. I'd start off at a local Parks & Recreation Department swimming pool, or a large and reputable Water Park. These are usually (not always!) professionally managed and you will have the opportunity to learn a lot and develop your swimming and Lifeguarding skills. Hiring is usually done about this time of year, so don't delay in looking for a job! Sometimes places will recruit directly from Lifeguard classes, too. Ask your Lifeguard Instructor.
Talk to other Lifeguards and your Supervisors once you have a job. They will likely be able to clue you into all sorts of other Lifeguarding opportunities. One of the best jobs I had as a teenager was lifeguarding at a summer camp in the Sierra Nevada mountains, a great place with great people and lots of good experience.
Many places will have a uniform suit and most places a uniform shirt and/or hat to help identify you as a member of the safety staff. Make sure you get a good hat and wear sunscreen....the skin cancer rates for former lifeguards is pretty high so best protect yourself! Otherwise, get a small duffle bag for your personal items and maybe a small cooler for your lunches. Good dark glasses with UV protection are a must. Other gear should be supplied by your employer or else they should give you a list and tell you where to get it.
