I have a collection of aniline, nappa, and Italian leather products, from leather jackets to handbags to planners and briefcases, which have been very well taken care of (cleaned and lotioned every 3-4 months per product). From my experience as a leather collector, I would estimate the general life of leather, if it's the full grain grade (with aniline being the ultimate, unparalleled top quality of all), to be able to last 30+ years. If your heirloom is of this full grain quality, as well as having been very well cared for, kept away from excessive heat and moisture, a 45-year-old leather jacket should have just as beautiful patina, if not even better, as new material. Top quality leather ages beautifully, with the sheen looking better and even softer texture through time.
